As part of my training as a student nurse I am taking a rotation with the RFDS in Port Hedland. Now I am experiencing life from the other side of the stretcher. A little bit of bush bandaging had his very broken leg splinted to some canoe paddles and transported to the airstrip on the back of an old door to meet the RFDS plane. I will never forget standing next to my good friend on the back of the bullcatcher and watching him lose his balance and fall off to be run over by the trailer we were towing. Some of my scariest days have involved motorbike stacks, horse and rider falls, and car accidents. I have seen numerous posts and stories on this site sharing stories of serious accidents out in the bush. Of course, sometimes it’s a bit more serious. Not a condition meriting a visit certainly, but the doctors will diagnose you over the phone and walk you through the box (“go to shelf two, find the red bottle with a sticker saying 226 on it. I’ve woken in the night to find my hay fever has progressed to uncontrollably itchy hives. In my time in the Kimberley I’ve had a fair bit of contact with this iconic and essential service. This box and that number is the first line of defence for health emergencies in the bush. Printed on the lid of that big green box is the number for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. In here is stored a range of medical supplies ranging from triangular bandages to strictly controlled vials of morphine and everything in between.

It’s a box we all hope not to have to use, but when you are so far from the nearest hospital and live in a world full of dangerous machinery, unforgiving flora and fauna and – let’s be honest – sometimes rather silly accidents, it’s a box we are all familiar with. He was extremely proud to have owned, driven, and exhibited a 1929 Ford Model A with a flathead engine.Ĭhuck leaves behind his ex-wife Debra (John Milligan) Horkan of Sparta, two sons, Chad (Christine) Horkan of Hartland, WI, Garrett (Svenja) Horkan of Downers Grove, IL, grandchildren Cassie, Tanner, and Cole Horkan of Hartland. Also a fan of regular-size cars, Chuck was a fixture at numerous car events locally and statewide. He was a long-time member of the Auto Modelers Group of WI. He loved anything “cars” and could talk for hours to fellow enthusiasts. A true aficionado, he won many local, national, and even international awards, and would spend hundreds of hours on each of his extraordinary creations.

In addition to music, his other passion was model car building. He played guitar and loved to dance, his moves being so crazy good he many times cleared the floor. A true audiophile since high school, Chuck was an avid music collector, who enjoyed everything from Miles Davis to Pantera. He was a kind, quiet man who relished life’s simple pleasures.

Having attended Blackhawk Technical College, he excelled in electronics and worked as an audio sales consultant for many years, 18 of them being at American TV in both Madison and Waukesha.Ĭhuck, a former Waukesha resident for 34 years, spent his last two years in a memory-care facility in DeForest, WI, struggling with Type 1 diabetes and frontotemporal dementia. He was born March 7, 1952, in Elkhorn, WI and was a 1970 graduate of Elkhorn High School. Age 68, passed away peacefully after a week-long battle with Coronavirus, on April 3, 2020, at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI.
